Biomethane purification and transportation are two of the most highly challenging issues in biogas production. In the purification process, CO2 and H2S are generally removed using different chemical solvents. While different solvents vary in terms of purification performance, they could also affect the economic viability of the whole process considerably. In the December 2020 Issue of Biofuel Research Journal, a South Korean-Pakistani research team compared Deep Eutectic Solvents (DESs) comprising aqueous ChCl/urea with conventional amines-based solvent (MEA) and ionic liquid (IL) from the economic point of view (DOI: 10.18331/BRJ2020.7.4.3). The authors then innovatively integrate DES-based biogas upgrading with a mixed refrigerant liquefaction process to facilitate the safe and economic transportation of biomethane over long distances. Overall, this study concludes that the developed process offers an economic superiority over the conventional chemical adsorptions. Photography & Cover art by BiofuelResJ. ©2020.
