On the Cover Zeolites are known as high-potential frameworks for designing advanced catalysts used in catalytic fast pyrolysis. However, the microporous nature of these materials hinders the diffusion of large molecules into micropores which in turn limits the accessibility of reactants to internal active sites (DOI: 10.18331/BRJ2020.7.3.5). In the September 2020 Issue of Biofuel Research Journal, Soltanian et al. critically review hierarchical mesoporous zeolites as a promising remedy for the diffusional and steric challenges faced by the conventional zeolites in the catalytic fast pyrolysis of biomass. The authors shed light on how different synthesis strategies of mesopore formation can influence the main produced precursors of transportation fuels. They conclude that the desilication procedure is a simple and applicable technique which could be effectively used for large-scale production of hierarchical zeolites.
