The sustainability of food and energy markets has been immensely impacted by the serious conflicts caused by the Ukraine-Russia war since late February 2022. This is due to the key role of these two countries in supplying natural gas and fertilizers and exporting grains and oilseeds to the international markets. As a response to the urgent call for action against the emergent crisis in food and biofuel markets, in the June 2022 Issue of Biofuel Research Journal, a team of researchers from Italy and Australia have attempted to address the imbalance of food and biofuel markets amid the Ukraine-Russia crisis through a systems thinking perspective. In this vein, they have provided a causal loop diagram of different variables involved within the food and biofuel markets in the wake of the war implications. They highlighted the importance of accelerating the transition from the 1st generation of biofuels to higher generations to mitigate the adverse effects of the war on both food security and sustaining biofuel production mandates. Not only will this transition reduce the pressure on the food market to achieve SDG 2 but also it will pave the way to move towards a circular economy and clean and affordable energy in line with SDG 7 during the post-war era (DOI: 10.18331/BRJ2022.9.2.5).
