Associate Professor Meisam Tabatabaei (University Technology MARA; UiTM, Malaysia) is the founding Editor-in-Chief of Biofuel Research Journal (BRJ) in Canada. Meisam has been working closely with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) to promote waste-oriented biofuels in the developing world. Since 2016, he has been the lead collaborator of the Lancet Commission on Public Health and Climate Change (UCL, UK) and has published over 220 publications including original research papers and reviews in journals such as The Lancet (Impact Factor: 53.254), Progress in Energy and Combustion Sciences (Impact Factor: 25.24.2), etc. (Citations: >5300, h-index: 37, i10 index: 123; May 2019, Google Scholar). He is also an invited professor at Lebanese University. Dr. Tabatabaei has been listed on the Clarivate Analytics` Highly Cited Researchers List (Top 1% scientists in the world) in Engineering Category since 2017. He is the Editor of the Book Volumes "Biogas: Fundamentals, Process, and Operation" and "Biodiesel: from Production to Combustion" which have been published by Springer Nature in 2018 and is on the editorial/advisory board of Data In Brief (Elsevier), MethodsX (Elsevier), Frontiers in Energy Research, Energy Sources, Part A: Recovery, Utilization, and Environmental Effects (Taylor & Francis), and International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment (Springer).

Yusuf Chisti is Professor of Biochemical Engineering in the School of Engineering, Massey University, New Zealand. Professor Chisti holds a MSc (Biochemical Engineering) degree from University of London, England, and a PhD in Chemical Engineering from University of Waterloo, Canada. He is a Chartered Engineer, CEng, and Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (FIChemE), UK. His previous appointments were with the University of Almería, Spain; Chembiomed Ltd, Edmonton, Canada; University of Waterloo, Canada; and The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Nigeria.

Professor Chisti has produced nearly 300 publications including a highly cited book (Airlift Bioreactors, Elsevier, 1989). He has lectured at nearly 200 conferences and other events worldwide. His research focuses on sustainable production of chemicals, materials and fuels through biotechnology. His research areas include bioreactor design, downstream bioseparations, microbial fermentations, enzyme technology, animal cell culture, bioremediation and bioconversion of wastes, and transport phenomena.

In 2014, Canada’s University of Waterloo awarded him its Engineering Alumni Achievement medal in the Academic Excellence category.

Professor Chisti’s expertise as a consultant is highly sought. He has assisted organizations and governments in nearly a dozen countries.

Professor Ahmad Fauzi Ismail is the Founding Director of Advanced Membrane Technology Research Center (AMTEC), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). Professor Fauzi obtained a PhD. in Chemical Engineering in 1997 from University of Strathclyde and MSc. and BSc. from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in 1992 and 1989 respectively. He is the author and co-author of over 450 refereed journals. He has authored 3 books, 40 book chapters and 3 edited books, 3 Patents granted, 17 Patents pending. His h-index is 52 with cumulative citations of over 10,000 (Google Scholar).

He has won more than 120 awards and among the outstanding awards are the Malaysia Young Scientist Award in 2000; ASEAN Young Scientist Award in 2001; Two times winner of the National Intellectual Property Award (Patent Category), 2009 and (Product Category), 2013; Two times winner of National Innovation Award (Waste to Wealth Category), 2009 and (Product Category), 2011. Recently, he won National Academic Award (Innovation and Product Commercialization Category) on August 2013 and Malaysian Toray Science and Technology Foundation Award, on 28 November 2013.

He is a Fellow of The Academy of Sciences Malaysia, Chartered Engineer in the UK (CEng) and a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (FIChemE). At present, he is the Editor-in-Chief of Desalination. Prof. Fauzi also served as the Editorial Board Members of Journal of Membrane Water Treatment, Jurnal Teknologi, Journal of Membrane Science and Research, Journal of Membrane and Separation Technology and the Advisory editorial board member of Journal of Chemical Technology and Biotechnology.

Professor Fauzi’s research focuses on development of polymeric, inorganic and novel mixed matrix membranes for water desalination, waste water treatment, gas separation processes, membrane for palm oil refining, photocatalytic membrane for removal of emerging contaminants, development of hemodialysis membrane and polymer electrolyte membrane for fuel cell applications. Professor Fauzi has involved extensively in R&D&C for multinational companies related to membrane-based processes for industrial application.

In 2013, Ministry of Education unanimously awarded him the Innovative Action Plan for Human Capital Development Tertiary Level award. On 4nd September 2014, he won The Merdeka Award for the Outstanding Scholastic Achievement Category. Currently Prof. Fauzi is the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Research and Innovation, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.

Professor Seeram Ramakrishna is a renowned professor of materials engineering and a world-leading expert on science and engineering of nanofibers. Dr. Solange I. Mussatto is the Head of a Research Group on Biomass Conversion and Bioprocess Technology at the Technical University of Denmark. Her studies explore the use of chemical, biochemical, and biological processes for biomass (lignocellulosic and macroalgae) pretreatment, as well as the conversion of biomass, by fermentation or chemical routes, into biobased products (including fuels, chemicals, materials and enzymes), and techno-economical assessment.

Dr. Mussatto’s research on the development of sustainable processes for the conversion of biomass into biobased products is internationally recognized. She has participated in numerous research projects and has more than 120 full papers published in high quality peer-reviewed journals, 1 book, 13 book chapters, 3 patents, and more than 230 papers in scientific conferences. Her published works have received more than 5800 citations. Dr. Mussatto holds an h-index of 39 (Google Scholar). Professor Suleyman I. Allakhverdiev is the Head of the Controlled Photobiosynthesis Laboratory at the Institute of Plant Physiology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), Moscow; Chief Research Scientist at the Institute of Basic Biological Problems RAS, Pushchino, Moscow Region; Professor at M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University, Moscow, Russia; and Invited-Adjunct Professor at the Department of New Biology, Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science & Technology (DGIST), Daegu, Republic of Korea.

He is originally from Chaykend (Karagoyunly/Dilichanderesi), Armenia, and he obtained both his B.S. and M.S. in Physics from the Department of Physics, Azerbaijan State University, Baku. He obtained his Dr. Sci. degree (highest/top degree in science) in Plant Physiology and Photobiochemistry from the Institute of Plant Physiology, RAS (2002, Moscow), and Ph.D. in Physics and Mathematics (Biophysics), from the Institute of Biophysics, USSR (1984, Pushchino). His Ph.D. advisors were Academician Alexander A. Krasnovsky and Dr. Sci. Vyacheslav V. Klimov.

He worked for many years (1990–2007) as a visiting scientist at the National Institute for Basic Biology (with Prof. Norio Murata), Okazaki, Japan, and in the Department de Chimie-Biologie, Université du Québec at Trois Rivières (with Prof. Robert Carpentier), Québec, Canada (1988–1990).

He has been a guest editor of many (more than 30) special issues in international peer-reviewed journals. At present, he is a member of the Editorial Board of more than 15 international journals. Besides being Editor-in-Chief of SOAJ NanoPhotoBioSciences, Associate Editor of International Journal of Hydrogen Energy, Section Editor of BBA Bioenergetics, he also acts as a referee for major international journals and grant proposals. Professor Faizal Bux is the Director of Institute for Water and Wastewater Technology at Durban University of Technology (South Africa).

He has been instrumental in establishing the Research Niche area of Wastewater Technology and further turning this into a centre of excellence known as the Institute for Water and Wastewater Technology. He has more than 20 years service at higher Education Institutes and has received numerous awards from external agencies including the University Top Senior researcher awards. The Institute was recently awarded a National Research Foundation Research Chairs initiative chair mainly due to the efforts of Prof Bux.

Professor Bux’s primary research areas are: wastewater biotechnology, bioremediation, algal biofuels research and biotechnology, constructed wetlands/rhizofiltration and rainwater harvesting. Prof Bux is ranked as the most published researchers at Durban University of Technology. Professor Ayhan Demirbas`s research on various types of biofuels in particular biodiesel is internationally recognized. Dr. Demirbas received his PhD (1980) in Chemical Engineering from Ankara University (Turkey). He then joined Selcuk University (SU, Turkey) in 1982 as an Assistant Professor. He moved to Karadeniz Technical University (KTU) in 1986 and was made a professor in 1991. Professor Demirbas is currently a full professor at Department of Industrial Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, King Abdulaziz University (Saudi Arabia).

Professor André P.C. Faaij (1969) is currently the Academic Director of the Energy Academy Europe and is also a distinguished professor in Energy System Analysis at Groningen University (The Netherlands). In this position, he works with many stakeholders on energy transitions from regional to international level. The Energy Academy Europe has been set-up as a centre of excellence on Energy Research, Education, and Entrepreneurship and is as such a cross-cutting strategy priority for the University of Groningen and its’ partners, including some 400 scientists from natural to social science.

Prior to this position André was a professor and scientific director of the Copernicus Institute of Utrecht University.

Professor Faaij`s research interests include bio-based economy, CCS, intermittent energy sources, alternative transport fuels, energy system studies and modeling, impacts and sustainability of energy systems, technological learning and innovation in energy systems, GHG balances & accounting, energy and research policies.

He is a member of a variety of expert groups in bio-energy and energy policy, research and strategic planning. He works as an advisor for governments, the EC, IEA, the UN system, GEF, OECD, WEF, WEC, the energy sector & industry, strategic consultancy, NGO’s, etc. He contributed to various IPCC reports, the World and Global Energy Assessment and IEA’s World Energy Outlook. He initiated and was task leader of the IEA Bioenergy Implementing Agreements Task 40 on Sustainable International Bioeenrgy Trade for 10 years. Furthermore he was appointed Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in June 2015. Professor Faaij received The Linneborn Prize; established in 1994 for outstanding contributions to the development of energy from biomass.

He is a much asked reviewer for a wide variety of journals as well as scientific (including the European Commission, ERC National Science Foundation and the Royal Academy) and government bodies. Dr. Keikhosro Karimi started his Ph.D on ethanol from lignocelluloses on 2000 at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Isfahan University of Technology (IUT), continued as an exchange student in Chemical Reaction Engineering, Chalmers University of Technology, and received his PhD in 2005 from IUT. He then continued his research on biofuel from wastes as a post doc at University of Borås, Sweden. Currently, he is a senior researcher and Associate Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering, IUT. He is also the director of the Industrial Biotechnology Group, Institute for Biotechnology, IUT. Dr. Karimi has approx. 8 years of industrial experiences and been involved in design, supervision, and start-up of ethanol plants in Iran.

His research activates are focused on biofuels from waste lignocelluloses, particularly bioethanol and biogas. He has co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed journal papers, three book chapters, and more than 150 conference papers. His h-index is 26 with cumulative citations of over 4,300 (Google Scholar).

Christian Kennes is Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of La Coruña since 1996. He did also work as a Faculty member at the University of Santiago de Compostela (1994-1995) just before joining the University of La Coruña and after spending some time in different research laboratories in Belgium,France, United States, and The Netherlands.

He is presently co-leader of the “Environmental Engineering” – group, focusing on research topics mainly related to environmental biotechnology, waste gas treatment, wastewater treatment, and bioconversion processes. Dr. Rajeev Kumar received his PhD in Biochemical and Chemical Engineering from Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH, USA and MS in Chemical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur, India. He is currently working as an Assistant Research Engineer at the Center for Environmental Research and Technology (CE-CERT), Bourns College of Engineering, University of California, Riverside (UCR), CA, USA. Prior to UCR, Dr. Kumar served as a Director and Scientist at Zymetis, Inc., College Park, Maryland for almost two years.

Dr. Kumar’s broad research focus is conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to biofuels and chemicals via biochemical and chemocatalytic routes. Dr. Kumar has authored/co-authored more than 45 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters. Co-Invention of a highly effective tetrahydrofuran based Co-solvent Enhanced Lignocellulosic Fractionation (CELF) technology and discovery of strong cellulase inhibition by xylooligomers and mannan polysaccharides and their oligomers are a few examples of his research accomplishments.

Professor Nick Lane is evolutionary biochemist and writer in the Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment, University College London (UK). Professor Duu-Jong Lee is a Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering, National Taiwan University (NTU) and Chair Professor and Dean of College of Engineering, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST). 

Professor Duu-Jong Lee received his Ph.D. degree in 1989 from Department of Chemical Engineering at NTU. Professor Lee is the recipient of many national and international awards and fellowships and is the Life-Time Distinguished Researcher by National Science Council of Taiwan.

Professor Rafael Luque (Ph.D 2005 from Universidad de Cordoba, Spain) has a significant experience on biomass and waste valorisation practises to materials, fuels and chemicals as well as nanoscale chemistry, microwave and flow chemistry, biofuels and green chemical methods in synthetic organic chemistry.

Professor Takeshi Matsuura`s research at University of Ottawa on Membrane Separation Processes is internationally recognized. Dr. Matsuura received his B.Sc. (1961) and M.Sc. (1963) degrees from the Department of Applied Chemistry at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Tokyo. He received his Doktor Ingenieur from the Institute of Chemical Technology of the Technical University of Berlin in 1965. He then joined the National Research Council of Canada in 1969.

Professor Matsuura joined the University of Ottawa in 1992 as a professor and the chairholder of the British Gas/NSERC Industrial Research Chair. He served as a professor of the Department of Chemical Engineering and the director of the Industrial Membrane Research Institute (IMRI) until he retired in 2002. He was then appointed as a professor emeritus in 2003. Professor Matsuura also served at the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering of the National University of Singapore as a visiting professor during the period of January to December 2003, and at the Faculty of Chemical and Natural Resources Engineering, University Technology Malaysia, Skudai, Malaysia, as a distinguished visiting professor, in years 2007, 2009 to 2015. Hugh E. Montgomery is a Professor of intensive Care Medicine at University College London (UK), where he also a directs of the UCL Centre for Human Health and Performance.

Hugh has published over 300 scientific publications including original research papers in journals such as Nature, The Lancet, and the New England Journal of Medicine.

Deepak Pant (PhD, Environmental Biotechnology, 2007) is a Senior Scientist at the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO), Belgium currently working on bioenergy, specifically, the design and optimization of bio-electrochemical systems for energy recovery from wastewater and microbial electrosynthesis for production of value-added chemicals and fuels through electrochemically driven bio-processes. Professor Mohammad Taherzadeh obtained his Ph.D. on conversion of lignocellulosic materials to ethanol, with a focus on the fermentation part. While graduated in 1999, he got a position as assistant professor at Chalmers University of Technology, which officially ended in 2004. During this period, he worked part time at Lund University of Technology, and then Isfahan University of Technology. He moved to Borås University in 2004, where he established his research group with a focus on conversion of waste materials to several products such as ethanol, biogas, hydrogen, feeds and superabsorbents.

Professor Taherzadeh`s vision is that “waste” is a “resource”, but our knowledge has not been developed enough to convert it to products, so we don’t use it and it remains waste that we want to get rid of it. If one looks at molecules and atoms of any wastes, we should be able to find out many methods to covert wastes into many valuable products. This has been the basic concept of the “Swedish Centre for Resource Recovery”, where he is the leader at the moment.

Professor Mark van Loosdrecht (h-index: 120, i10-index: 530) is a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and the Dutch Academy of Engineering (AcTI).

Professor Mark van Loosdrecht`s research at Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands) is internationally recognized by the combination of scientific understanding of complex systems and development of new processes. Dr. van Loosdrecht’s scientific interests are mainly related to biofilm processes, nutrient conversion processes and the role of storage polymers in microbial ecology. In particular, he is interested in new processes related to wastewater treatment and resource recovery. His research has resulted in several processes currently applied on full scale such as the Sharon process, Anammox process and Nereda process.

Professor Yong Wang joined PNNL in 1994 and was promoted to Laboratory Fellow in 2005. He led the Catalysis and Reaction Engineering Team from 2000 to 2007, and has served as the Associate Director of the Institute for Integrated Catalysis (http://iic.pnl.gov) since 2008. In 2009, Dr. Wang assumed a joint position at Washington State University and PNNL. In this unique position, he continues to be a Laboratory Fellow and associate director of IIC at PNNL and is the Voiland Distinguished Professor in Chemical Engineering at WSU, an endowed, full professorship with tenure.

He was recently elected to the fellow of National Academy of Inventors (NAI) and the member of the Washington State Academy of Science (WSAS), and is a fellow of 4 major professional societies: AIChE (American Institute of Chemical Engineers), ACS (American Society of Chemistry), RSC (Royal Society of Chemistry), and AAAS (American Association of the Advancement of Science).

He has won numerous awards including 2006 Asian American Engineer of the Year Award, Presidential Green Chemistry Award, 3 R&D 100 Awards, Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award from Chemical Engineering at WSU, 2 PNNL Inventor of the Year Awards, Battelle Distinguished Inventor Award, and the first recipient of PNNL Laboratory Director’s Award for Exceptional Scientific Achievement Award.

He is the past chair of the Energy & Fuel Division of the American Chemical Society, and currently serves as the director to the Catalysis and Reaction Engineering division of AIChE. He is the Editorial Board Member of 7 catalysis and energy related journals including ACS CatalysisCatalysis Today, Chinese Journal of Catalysis, and Journal of Energy Chemistry.

Dr. Nick Watts is the Executive Director of the Lancet Countdown: Tracking Progress on Health and Climate Change, an independent and multi-disciplinary research collaboration between academic centres around the world. It is based at University College London’s Institute for Global Health, and is a continuation of the 2015 Lancet Commission on Health and Climate Change. The Countdown tracks and drives progress towards a world which is responding to climate change in a way that protects and promotes public health.

Nick is a medical doctor having qualified from the University of Western Australia, and trained in population health (UWA) and public policy (University College London). He regularly consults with the World Health Organization’s Dept. of Public Health, Environmental and Social Determinants of Health, where he provides technical expertise on a range of policy issues, and supports the WHO’s engagement with the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Nick also works as the Director of the UK Health Alliance on Climate Change, which brings together the UK’s major health institutions, including the BMA, The Lancet, the Faculty of Public Health, and the Royal Colleges of Physicians, Nursing, General Practitioners. The Alliance aims to support the health profession and engage government in accelerating a transition towards a healthier climate.

Dr. Yi Yang is currently a senior research scientist at CSRA Inc, working with the Environmental Protection Agency on building life-cycle assessment models to support their sustainable materials management policies. He also has a research position at the Ecology Department of University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, working on biodiversity and biofuels.  

Yi Yang is a Subject Editor of The International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment and also serves on the editorial board of Journal of Cleaner Production. He has been working in the area of life cycle assessment for 10 years and has a broad interest in environmental sustainability and policy issues.
